Coastal cities like Cape Town have milder temperatures, averaging 20-30°C (68-86°F), with pleasant sunny days. Occasional thunderstorms can occur, especially in the interior, but they are usually short-lived.

In Victoria Falls during January, you can expect hot, humid and wet weather — it’s the heart of the rainy season. Average daytime temperatures typically reach around 28–31 °C (82–88 °F) with nights staying warm near 20 °C (68 °F).

Plugs

For UK passport holders travelling to South Africa and Zimbabwe, you will need a travel adapter for your electronic devices. The local currency in South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR). Exchange rates can fluctuate, and it’s recommended to exchange money at official banks or exchange bureaus. Always inform your bank of your travel plans.

In Zimbabwe we would suggest to take US$ cash in small denominations it is generally more convenient than relying on local cash withdraws.

Tipping in South Africa

Tipping is customary in South Africa for various services. In restaurants, a tip of 10-15% of the total bill is generally expected if service isn’t already included. For hotel staff, like porters and housekeepers, a small amount (e.g., 20-50 ZAR per service) is appreciated. Petrol attendants, car guards, and tour guides also often receive tips. It’s common to round up taxi fares or offer a small tip for good service.
