Monmouth School Pre-Season Rugby Tour to France | Venatour Schools

 In Schools

With the start of Rugby World Cup 2019™, the curtain has been raised on what will be a thrilling season of rugby.

The impact of the sporting spectacle in Japan will be felt by all players, especially those young players aiming to be the next Beauden Barrett, Owen Farrell, or in Monmouth’s case alumni Hallam Amos.

Therefore, Venatour were delighted to take the next generation, Monmouth School for Boys, on their pre-season rugby tour to France.

After touching down in Lyon, the team transferred to their accommodation in Vichy and settled in with a training session and team meeting before bed.

Although Venatour provides tours for all sports, we are a rugby-mad company and it was great to see the focus of the lads as they began training at 7am the next day with a track session, before two more sessions after breakfast and lunch.

After putting in the hard work, Monmouth’s third day was one of leisure: a day to explore their French surroundings and even engage in a (maybe not so French) game of ten pin bowling.

The day of rest was definitely needed as the next day the squad travelled to La Gauthière, the training complex of ASM Clermont Auvergne. The French giants, featuring international stars Morgan Parra, Wesley Fofana and Greig Laidlaw, provided a coaching experience for the team, with French players joining Monmouth for the session.

After a tour of the famous Marcel-Michelin Stadium and Interactive Rugby Club Museum, the team were ready to face their first pre-season opponent, with the u18s taking on R. C. Clermont-Cournon D’Auvergne.

In a thrilling match, Monmouth u18s took the victory, but applauded the hospitality of their French counterparts.

The following day it was the turn of the u16s to maintain Monmouth’s winning start as they travelled to ASRFCommentary.

After rousing renditions of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau and La Marseillaise, Monmouth started at a canter. By half-time the tourists sped to a 33-0 lead, with the match finishing 47-12.

This was a fitting end to a spectacular pre-season tour and from everyone at Venatour we wish Monmouth the best of luck in their upcoming rugby season.

After the tour, 1st XV Coach Mr Paul Morris said, “It was all fantastic […] the boys had a great time and everything worked out really well. Anakin, the rep, was excellent and sorted out any issues very quickly.”
