Zimbabwe… a real wonder

Once the bread basket of Africa and now well on track for a return to its former glory!

The issues Zimbabweans have experienced over recent years are well documented but with things improving on the ground, it is now very much back on the sport tour market. The sports facilities and infrastructure are back on track and for someone looking to reignite a little trailblazing… now is the time to go!

SPORTS & SEASONS

Rugby

MAY–AUG

Played at both school and club level. The traditional schools still have a very strong rugby ethos and have maintained their links with schools in South Africa, which has meant that the rugby has remained fresh!

Netball

MAY–AUG

Hockey

MAY–AUG

Over recent years schools have developed very quickly with the advent of new astro turf pitches. Not so long ago you’d have had to play on grass – not anymore!

Cricket

SEP–MAR

First class wickets and terrific weather will mean you will come away all the better for the experience.

CULTURE

The African way of life is one to embrace with plenty of opportunities to experience cultural shows and visit game reserves. If time allows you should try to see a real wonder – Great Zimbabwe – which was once the capital and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Activities

The first thing that springs to mind in Zimbabwe might be Victoria Falls and Big Game viewing, and you’d be right! Victoria Falls are everything you’d expect, and you can add on a night at Hwange Game Reserve to take in the Big Five. White water rafting, helicopter flights and bungee jumping are all possible add-ons.

If staying closer to Harare – there are still good game reserves to visit for day trips.

Accommodation

Billeting is available in the centres and boarding school stays can assist with costs. Downtown hotels and game reserves are still very good and have a real colonial feel in places.

Game reserves offer a great way to end a tour – especially if you can arrange a braai under the stars on the final night.
