The island full of culture
Sri Lanka, the Spice Island is quite simply a must tour destination for anyone with a passion for food, culture and sport – and not necessarily in that order!
As you arrive in Colombo, you are hit by the aromas and noise of the sub-continent. That memory will last a life time and always bring a smile to your face. The beauty of a tour to Sri Lanka is that you get to play at first class venues, experience a proper tour as you travel from city to city and are able to ensconce yourself in the local culture.
SPORTS & SEASONS
Surprisingly popular to the uninformed. The rivalry between some of the big schools is as keenly contested as any local derby in schools rugby.
Very popular at most schools. The local girls love playing against touring sides, even if they do sometimes tower over them! Games played outdoors on tar, cement or grass courts depending on where you play.
Girls hockey is played in Colombo and Kandy where you have access to the Astro Turf. Playing a touring side from the UK is as great an occasion for the local girls as it is for the tourists and it has been known for National Anthems to be played before the start, whilst meeting local dignitaries!
Hard to beat Sri Lanka for a cricketing experience. They eat, sleep and drink their cricket and you can be sure they will be ready and waiting from you with open arms. Many of the tours get to play on Test Venues, such as Asgiriya Stadium up in Kandy and on the same trip you might play on a local village pitch, within striking distance of the Indian Ocean. A net session with a few International names is also popular.
The country is awash with culture and you won’t ever have far to go to visit a temple. In Kandy “The Temple of the Tooth” is a must see – so tranquil and beautiful, along with some fire-walking at a cultural show. The tea plantations and Spice Gardens take you on a journey through the colonial past and to go even further back in history, Climb Sigariya Rock Fortress.
A visit to the elephant orphanage brings you up close and personal to the incredibly large yet calm animals, synonymous with the sub-continent (if time allows you can ride an elephant). For those looking for more adrenalin-filled activities, you can try your hand at white water rafting. Along the south coast there is the turtle hatchery where you can see how these gentle giants of the sea reproduce and are protected by the local communities.
Excellent standard of tourist hotels provide very good value for money. Stay in some grand ex colonial-type establishments, downtown business hotels with modern gyms and large pools – through to modern beach side properties.
